PNP commends Trade Minister for Cement Price Regulation Bill

The People’s National Party (PNP) has commended the Minister for Trade and Industry, KT Hammond, for introducing a bill to regulate cement prices, making it more affordable for ordinary Ghanaians.

“The PNP commends the Minister for this positive effort aimed at benefiting Ghanaian families. We believe that only those seeking to undermine this effort would oppose this commendable legislation,” said a PNP spokesperson.

The party urged the Ministry of Trade, Ministry of Works and Housing, and Ministry of Agriculture to extend this initiative by introducing legislative instruments to regulate food and rent prices, addressing the escalating costs affecting many Ghanaian families.

“We call on all Ghanaian families to vote against any political party in the 2024 elections that prioritizes business interests over citizens’ wellbeing. Your families deserve leaders who will prioritize your welfare over corporate profits,” the spokesperson emphasized.

The PNP assured its commitment to supporting Ghana through difficulties and challenges, prioritizing the welfare of families over corporate profits.

“We will support Ghana through all difficulties and challenges. PNP: My Family, My Community, My Motherland,” the spokesperson concluded.

Meanwhile, the Chamber of Cement Manufacturers, Ghana (COCMAG), has expressed strong reservations over a proposed Legislative Instrument (LI) seeking to regulate cement prices, submitted to Parliament by the Minister of Trade and Industry, K.T. Hammond.

According to COCMAG, the proposal was tabled in Parliament without consulting industry stakeholders, undermining fairness and transparency.

The Chamber argues that the proposal fails to address the root causes of cement price escalation, particularly the rapid depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi against the US dollar.
