Rate of illicit drug usage among the youth alarming — NACOC

The Eastern Regional Head of Education at the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), Worlanyo Wazila, has revealed that the rate of illicit drug use among the youth in the region and the country as a whole is very alarming.

He called for more awareness creation to help reduce the menace.

He indicated how the use of illicit drugs is now prevalent among even basic school children, describing the situation as alarming which needs more awareness creation since the situation doesn’t affect the just user but rather everyone in the society.

Mr. Wazila said this when he met with the Legal Aid Commission, prison officers, psychiatric nurses, state attorneys, chiefs, and several other stakeholders to educate the public on the health, social, and legal consequences of the use of illicit drugs.

Speaking to the youth, the Chief of Sankubenase, Osabarima Atta Gyamfi II pointed out it is difficult for drug addicts to stay away from it.

According to him, the use of illicit drugs among the youth of today has become a common phenomenon and has destroyed them and rendered several others useless.

He said the campaign against drug usage should be intensified and taken to the doorsteps of the youth in their schools and other places w here they can be reached to save them from the dangers ahead.

The Founder of the Nacem Foundation, Stephen Nana Afful also spoke about the need for dialogue and what it intends to achieve.
