SALL trial: Judge expresses displeasure at EC’s absence in court

A High Court in Ho has expressed displeasure at the persistent absence of lawyers for the Electoral Commission (EC) in court.

The presiding judge, Justice Owoahene Acheampong’s concern came during the hearing of an application by the petitioners’ lawyer, Mr. Philip Jimanor, seeking leave to file amended replies to answers filed by the EC and John Peter Amewu, the 2nd Respondent.

Hr recalled a previous occasion when he had similarly commented on the absence of the EC’s former lawyer, Mr. Sekyi-Boampong.

He expressed surprise that the EC’s lawyers would not be in court, and no representative of the state institution would be present either.

Mr. Benedict Kofitse, lawyer for the 2nd Respondent, did not oppose the application.

The judge granted the petitioners’ application and adjourned the case to Thursday, June 20, 2024.

The court had earlier set aside June 20th and 21st, 2024, for the trial of the suit.

The petitioners have since filed their amended replies. However, the EC is yet to file any witness statements.

Meanwhile, the EC has complied with the court’s order to file the list of registered voters in the SALL traditional areas during the 2020 Parliamentary election.
