UEW COLANG Holds Public Lecture on Tuberculosis

To commemorate the 2022 World Tuberculosis Day, the College of Languages Education (COLANG), University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has organised a public lecture as well as tuberculosis (TB) screening and counseling for patrons in Ajumako and its environs.

The events, held on the global theme “Invest to End TB. Save Lives”, took place at the Ajumako Campus Assembly Hall and the COLANG Clinic.

The College Medical Officer, Dr. George W. B. Bonsu, in his purpose for the public lecture, underscored the need to create awareness of TB to save more lives.

“TB is the world’s 13th leading cause of death, and as COLANG Clinic in accordance with the theme for this year are investing in education, therefore we want to organise this public lecture to raise awareness of TB, to learn and unlearn about TB; prevention and management.

“We intend to make the most of this opportunity so that at the end of the programme, we will all have a good understanding of what tuberculosis is and how to prevent it, as well as the knowledge that tuberculosis is curable,” he remarked.

Chairman for the occasion and the Director of the Institute for Educational Research and Innovation Studies (IERIS), UEW, Prof. Ephraim Avea Nsoh, in his remarks, urged attendees to take the function seriously and listen carefully to the speakers in order to return home well-informed and satisfied.

The Director of Health Services, UEW, Dr. (Mrs.) Beth Offei-Awuku, who was the guest speaker, beseeched participants to be UEW’s TB advocates and carry whatever knowledge they had gained to their families, classrooms and neighborhoods beyond.

TB Coordinator, District Health Directorate, Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam, Mr. Emmanuel Sarfo, who was the main speaker for the event, highlighted the history of tuberculosis, causes, symptoms, effects and prevention of the infectious airborne disease. He urged the audience present to help spread the word on TB and also observe all the safety TB protocols such as covering nose and mouth when sneezing, washing of hands with soap and water regularly, among others.
