NDC Presidential Primaries: I Knew I Couldn’t Beat Mahama – Kojo Bonsu Confesses

Former Mayor of Kumasi, Kojo Bonsu has admitted that he had no hopes of defeating former President John Dramani Mahama in the just-ended NDC Presidential Primaries right from the start.

The presidential candidate aspirant made this disclosure when he spoke in an interview with Accra-based Citi TV.

Former President Mahama emerged victorious in the NDC May 13, 2023 primaries with over 98% of the total votes defeating Kojo Bonsu after former Minister for Finance, Dr. Kwabena Duffour pulled out of the race a day before the elections citing a number of reasons.

After the landslide victory of the former President, Kojo Bonsu has admitted that he believed there was no way he was going to win over his former boss, however, he was anticipating that maybe the delegates might change their minds and vote for him.

“To be honest, I didn’t believe I could beat former President Mahama from the start, but I was hoping that maybe people would change their minds and vote for me,” the former mayor of Kumasi confessed.

Despite his huge defeat, he noted that he does not regret his decision to contest for the flagbearer slot. He is convinced that his decision to contest the former president has made the party stronger and strenghtened democracy in the NDC.

“We would not have known that there are problems down there because there are areas that he wouldn’t have visited. But because of these primaries, he [Mr. Mahama] went everywhere. Normally, he would only focus on certain regions, but now he has been everywhere,” he noted.
