Akosombo Dam Spillage: Gov’t donates GH¢5 million to flood victims

The government has allocated GH5 million through the Ministry of Roads and Highways to repair all road networks in the regions impacted by the Akosombo Dam leak.

The sum also covers repairs for any harm that might have resulted from the spilling on the Lower Volta Bridge, popularly known as the Sogakope Bridge.

This information was provided by Mr. Kwasi Amoako-Atta, Minister of Roads and Highways, during a working visit to the region to inspect the state of the Sogakope Bridge and get firsthand information on the effects of the spillage on local road networks.

He claimed that as a result, he had instructed the Roads Fund Coordinator to put aside GH5 million for the Bridge and other impacted roads’ repair work.

“The Road Fund is there for road maintenance, we have little money in there but because of the emergency we are experiencing, His Excellence the President has directed that we should do everything possible to ameliorate the effect of this disaster so, on the strength of that authority, I have directed the Road Fund Coordinator to set that aside, informing the Board to set it aside for this exercise.

“So at least, we have some legs to stand on, that is, we have initial GH¢5 million to tackle the roads particularly the Bridge,” he said.

Alhaji Dr. Abass, the Chief Director of the Ministry of Roads and Highways, Mr. James Amoo-Gottfried, the Director of Urban Roads, and Thomas Mbomba, the Deputy Minister of Roads and Highways, were among the officials and engineers who were with the Minister and the Ghana Highway Authority.
