Bow your heads in shame – Egyapa Mercer on power outage conflicting releases

Member of Parliament for Sekondi Constituency, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, has called out those responsible for the conflicting releases on the cause of the power outage in parts of the country on Friday, July 7.

He said they should bow their heads in shame.

Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, Egyapa Mercer expressed his dissatisfaction with the power outage on Friday and bemoaned how the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCO), West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo), and the Electricity Company of Ghana handled the situation.

“The update we all received was clear as to the cause of the shortfall but I was surprised when I saw the statement by ECG and GRIDCO issued a statement telling us what the cause was brought out a statement but went ahead to include the WAPCO bit. GRIDCO provided an update that gas supplied from Ghana Gas halted due to a power outage. They later issued a statement it was due to some technical hitches by WAPCO,” he noted.

The Deputy Energy Minister reiterated that those who brought about the misinformation should bow their heads in shame.

A power crisis which plunged some parts of the country into a power outage led ECG and GRIDCO to issue press releases to intimate the cause of the challenge.

In separate statements, the powerhouses stated that a result of a power failure at the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant (GPP) and a WAPCo technical challenge brought about the blackout.

This claim was later dispelled by the West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited.

In a statement on Sunday, WAPCo demanded an apology “GRIDCO and ECG owe us an apology for lying that the current Dumsor in parts of Ghana is partly due to technical issues faced by the WAGP. Such insincerity is most condemnable and ought to attract sanctions.”
