CODEO Demands Immediate Resignation Of President Akufo-Addo’s Newly Appointed EC Board Members

The Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) is demanding the immediate resignation of two of the newly appointed board members of the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC).

President Akufo-Addo in accordance with the 1992 Constitution appointed three new members to the board of the Electoral Commission last month.

The three new chairpersons are Dr. Peter Appiahene, Hajia Salima Ahmed Tijani, and Rev. Akua Ofori Boateng.

But CODEO is calling for the honorable resignation of Dr. Peter Appiahene and Hajia Salima Ahmed Tijani from the Electoral Commission.

CODEO made this call on Wednesday, April 5, 2023, at a press conference in Accra.

Explaining the reasons for this call, leading member of CODEO, Rev. Dr. Fred  Degbey noted that the resignation will help to protect the cross-party trust in Ghana’s independent electoral management body.

According to Dr. Degbey, it appears the reputation of the two new chairpersons are politically tainted as they have been aligned with some political parties in the country.

He, therefore, indicated that in the supreme interest of the nation’s democracy, peace and credible elections, the two should honorable resign.

“We are painfully aware that voluntary and constitutionally grounded revocation of these unfortunate and democratically problematic EC appointments by the President is extremely unlikely. However, nothing stops the affected appointees, namely Dr. Peter Appiahene and Hajia Salima Tijani from voluntarily and honorably resigning from the EC,” Rev. Degbey told the media.

He added that “this will be in the supreme interest of our country’s continued democratic progress, election peace and credibility and indeed overall national interest.”
