Coup d’état will not benefit us -– Bagbin cautions against reversal of Ghana’s democracy

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, is cautioning against the reversal of Ghana’s democracy to a military regime and wants the country not to undermine factors that can shake the foundation of the democracy.

Alban Bagbin also advocated for an improvement in the country’s participatory democracy.

The Speaker of Parliament was speaking at a forum as part of the celebrations to mark Ghana’s 30-year parliamentary democracy at the Cape Coast Palace.

Amongst other issues, Mr. Bagbin expressed concern about recent developments in neighboring countries where democratic governments have been toppled by coup makers and that he wants Ghanaians to be wary about factors that can throw Ghana into a similar situation.

He intimated that it will not augur well for the country to reverse to a military regime and wants efforts made to improve the democratic system even better.

Alban Bagbin, however, expressed concern about the decision to prevent traditional leaders from taking active participation in politics and is advocating for their inclusion in parliamentary affairs whilst also expressing worry about the unequal representation for specific groups of persons such as women, youth, and the disabled in Parliament.

The current parliament has just 14.5 percent of women whilst the youth constitutes less than 5 percent and the disabled with no representation.

For his part, the Oguaamanhene Osabarimba Kwesi Atta II expressed worry over the adulteration of culture and the diminishing of true Ghanaian values and wants steps to be taken to protect them.
