Court fines Wa Technical Institute student GHC2k for assaulting housemaster

A final-year student at the Wa Technical Institute was fined GH2,000 by the Wa Magistrate Court for physically attacking Ishmail Musah Froko, the school’s housemaster.

The student’s parents are responsible for covering the portion of the teacher’s medical expenses.

The court presided over by Maxwell Mac-Brown Titrigu, convicted the student, Yissif Mudaair, on his own plea.

Mudaair was made to sign a bond promising to behave well for a year, defaulting he would serve the same amount of time in jail.

The judge said he considered the defendant’s status as a student and also a first-time offender before reaching a conclusion.

Salifu Razak, a second defendant charged with the teacher’s assault, chose not to show up in court, while Christian Kieseh Confidence was released from custody after an inquiry established his innocence.

Background

The Police on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, detained three students from the Wa Technical Institute in Wa Municipality in the Upper West Region for attacking a housemaster.

The students attacked their housemaster, Ishmail Musah Froko, at the House Two Block while on a routine visit.

Mr. Musah Froko was rushed to the Wa Municipal Hospital for emergency medical care after suffering severe injuries.

According to close sources, one student was detained for assaulting the housemaster, and two others were arrested for assaulting a student who intervened to save the assaulted teacher.

The school’s headmaster informed parents that the situation was under control and that the safety of their children at the school was a top priority.

He advised parents to show a strong interest in how their children were developing in terms of behavior and conduct.

The three detained students are assisting the police with investigations.
