Courts Resume Business Today As JUSAG Conditionally Suspends Strike Action

After days of suspending operations, the Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) is set to resume work today, Tuesday, May 30, 2023.

The National Executives of JUSAG declared an indefinite strike on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, following the failure of the government in paying heed to their demands aimed at ensuring better conditions of service.

Among a number of demands, JUSAG had earlier demanded a review of their salaries which is provided in the constitution to be reviewed every two years. It noted that the various proposals made to the government regarding the implementation of the approved cost of living allowance for members were also not being addressed urgently.

Following the strike action, a meeting which was held on Monday, May 29, 2023, between executives of JUSAG, the Government represented by the Office of the President, the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, the Office of the Attorney General, and the Ministry of Justice and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission resulted in the conditional suspension of the industrial action.

According to a statement from JUSAG after the meeting,  the strike has been put on hold for two weeks “to pave the way for engagement among parties in order to fast-track the consideration, approval and payment of the new salaries in the month of June 2023”.

JUSAG further noted that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed to commit the parties to a sincere and amicable resolution of the issue within the stipulated timelines.
