E/R: Pre-tertiary teacher unions threaten strike over unpaid allowances

Pre-tertiary teacher unions in the Eastern Region of Ghana are demanding better working conditions and payment of outstanding allowances from the government.

The unions, comprising the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and Coalition of Concerned Teachers-Ghana (CCT-GH), have given the government an ultimatum to settle their demands by May 13 or face industrial action.

At a press conference,  Peter D. Kpakpo-Atsem, Eastern Regional Secretary of GNAT, expressed frustration over the government’s failure to implement allowances agreed upon in 2009 and 2020 collective agreements. Despite 15 years of negotiations, the government has yet to fulfill its promises.

The unions have prioritized four critical allowances: deprived areas, extra assessment, Book/Data/Online and teaching support, and upward adjustment on CPD allowances.

These allowances are part of the 17 agreed upon in the collective agreement.

Teachers expressed their concerns, questioning why the government has refused to listen to their pleas.

The unions’ action aims to pressure the government to address their long-standing demands and improve their working conditions.
