Encroachment of airport lands unacceptable — Bawumia

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has called on the management of the Ghana Airports Authority and Ghana Lands Commission to do well in protecting airport lands from encroachment.

He made the call during the commissioning ceremony of the second phase of the Tamale International Airport on Tuesday, August 22, 2023.

The Tamale airport is the third busiest airport in Ghana after Kotoka and the Kumasi airports serving as an important transportation hub for the region by connecting Tamale to domestic and international destinations.

In September 2014, work commenced on the first phase which includes the upgrade and expansion of the airport to international standards at the cost of a hundred and thirty million dollars.

The second phase commenced in 2019 which comprises of an ultra-modern terminal and other ancillary facilities at the cost of seventy million dollars.

Expressing his delight at the completion of the project, the vice president Dr Mahamudu Bawumia said the Tamale International Airport will serve as an alternative and compliment to the Kotoka international airport, targeted at improving the aviation industry of Ghana to meet every international standard.

The Vice president also used the occasion to call on managers of airports in Ghana and the Lands Commission of Ghana to ensure that airport lands are protected from encroachment which he says, is unacceptable.

In a speech read on his behalf, the King of Dagbon, Ya-Naa Abukari II said the international airport would be of great benefit to the people of Ghana, saying he cannot wait to see the first non-Hajj pilgrimage international flight landing and taking off from the Tamale International Airport.
