Bad roads causing miscarriages, affecting economic activities in Telegu – Residents

Pregnant women living in Tetegu in the Weija Gbawe Municipality of the Greater Accra Region are suffering miscarriages and other complications as a result of poor nature of roads in the area.

It’s also become a great challenge to transport emergency health patients.

Accessing health facilities for antenatal care is always a challenge to residents. In some cases the best option is to forgo the antenatal care over fear of having a miscarriage after plying the deplorable road. It even becomes life threatening to transport pregnant women who are in labor.

There are cases where some of them have delivered in vehicles while they were being transported to maternal health facilities for delivery.

Commercial transport operators say they feel reluctant responding to emergencies over fear of damaging their vehicles. They have had to charge extra fares to be able to balance their sales.

The situation is having a negative economic impact on residents. An average family of five spend GHC 50.00 on transport daily. That translates to roughly GHC 1.250.00 each month.

Residents believe transport fares would have been cheaper if the roads were in good shape.

Over the years, residents of Tetegu have had to make financial contributions to put their roads in good shape. But it has not been sustainable and hence calling on government to come to the assistance of the community.
