Gonjaland Traditional Council throws support behind former President Mahama

The Chief and Overlord of the Gonjaland Traditional Council, Jira Yagbonwura Bekunutu Jewu Soale I, has thrown his unyielding support behind the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama to win this year’s presidential elections.

Jira Yagbonwura Bekunutu said he needed to give his son, the former president, such support as he laces his shoes to contest in the December 7 general elections.

Jira Yagbonwura made this known when the former president called on him at the Jakpa Palace on Sunday, 25th February as part of his Building Ghana Tour.

The streets of the Savannah regional capital Damongo were electrified on Sunday as one of its illustrious sons and former president came back home to solicit support.

The point of call is the Jakpa Palace to seek the royal blessings of the president of the Savannah Regional House of Chiefs and others at the traditional front.

The Yagbonwura’s Imam led Islamic clerics across the region to recite the Holy Quran to say prayers in support of the ambitions of the candidate.

Addressing the durbar in a speech read on his behalf, Jira Yagbonwura Bekunutu Jewu Soale I, threw his support on behalf of the entire kingdom behind the former president and candidate for the NDC.

“When you have a son and a great one like this fighting for a national course, you as a father will have to be happier, fully supportive and so am I.”

Jira Yagbonwura, however, cautioned the candidates, the parties, and other stakeholders to ensure peaceful elections before during, and after the elections.

“I would like to send a warning caution to the referee and that is the Electoral Commission to the effect that they must remain neutral and work with both sides to ensure fairness in the election.”

John Dramani Mahama assured the chiefs and people of Damongo and its environs of providing them with potable drinking water to end the decades-old water crisis that has bedeviled the regional capital when elected as the president of the country.

“Before we left office, we took a loan agreement to parliament to create a water supply project for Damongo. Our opponents on the other side opposed it and said that they will be coming into government, they are sure they will win the election and that when they win, they will come and do the project. For eight years now, the people of Damongo are thirsty they don’t have water. What amount of money is better than having your own water system that would make sure you have water to drink?”

The king and President of the Savannah Regional House of Chiefs Jira Yagbonwura Bekunutu Jewu Soale I bestowed on him a chieftaincy title “Kashentewura” literally meaning “the chief of truth “.

From the palace, the tour trail moved to the Damongo Nursing and MidWifery Training College where he interacted with some health professionals, and teachers among others.

As the former president takes his Building Ghana Tour across the country, he is confident of his home region’s support to emerge victorious in this year’s elections.
