Government Assurance Committee inspects textbooks in basic schools in Central Region

The Government Assurance Committee of Parliament has paid a working visit to some selected basic schools in the Central Region.

According to the Chairperson of the Committee, Patricia Appiagyei, the purpose of the visit was to verify and be sure as a Committee that promises made by the Minister of Education, Hon. Yaw Osei Adutwum in relation to delivery of textbooks to basic books in the Central Region has been fulfilled.

The schools visited included Islamic Research School at Awutu Senya East, Osubonpayin Ateibu MA Basic School at Effutu, Otapirow DA Basic School in Gomoa Central, Swedru Salvation Army School for the Deaf, Agona West and Apewosika MA Basic School, Cape Coast Metro.

Briefing the Press after the inspection, it was revealed that not all the schools visited have full complement of the textbooks.

The Committee was also not pleased about the current distribution of textbooks system. For instance, some textbooks belonging to schools visited were packed at the Depot waiting for collection because the school might be in financial difficulty and has no other means to go for the textbooks.

Another challenge was that came to the fore was that, of all the schools visited none of them had proper accounting system for the various book received.

To rectify this anomaly, the Head Teachers pleaded with the Committee to ensure that a district supply depot is built at Winneba so that it could lessen their burden of going to Cape Coast for the books.

It would be recalled that in 2022, the Education Minister told the House that his Ministry would be supplying textbooks to all basic schools in the Central, therefore the Committee visited the schools to ascertain the claim by the Education Minister.

The Education Minister would be invited by the Committee to the House to explain the situation following their findings.
