Government failing citizens, lying about WAEC funding – Minority

The Member of Parliament for Builsa South and deputy ranking member on the education committee of Parliament, Dr. Clement Apaak, has accused the government of failing its citizens and lying about funding for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

Speaking on Metro TV’s News Beat on Monday, June 24, 2024, Dr. Apaak stated that the government’s claim of paying GHS80 million Cedis to WAEC is a “blatant lie”, and that only GHS47 million Cedis has been paid, which is “woefully inadequate” to conduct the upcoming Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) successfully.

“There’s no reason why the government is failing to provide WAEC with the needed funding to properly plan and conduct this year’s BECE and it is a blatant lie”

The Builsa South lawmaker also accused the Majority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh of misleading Parliament and to large extent, Ghanaians when he claimed that government had settled the arrears due the examination governing body, describing the GHS47 Million cedis released by government as “woefully inadequate to allow WAEC to undertake the needed processes to ensure that the BECE which is set to take off on July 8, kicks of in a reasonable and acceptable fashion”.

“The majority chief whip misled the nation and lie on the floor of Parliament when he claimed that government had paid the arrears due WAEC to the tune of 80 million cedis, it’s not true. What government has done is to pay 47 million cedis which is inadequate”.

The 2024 BECE is scheduled to start on July 8, 2024 but Dr. Apaak warned that the exam may not proceed smoothly due to the government’s failure to provide sufficient funding to WAEC.

He called on the government to prioritize national development and growth by investing in essential areas like education.

“Government is failing its citizens, government ought to invest our resources in areas that are important to our national development and growth”.
