Gyan needs to play trial matches to prove his competence before World Cup consideration – Poloo

Black Stars legend Mohammed Poloo has called for the inclusion of Asamoah Gyan in Ghana’s 26-man squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar

However, he believes the former men’s national team captain must justify his inclusion by featuring in a number of friendlies before such consideration.

“It is very difficult to say but with the experience of Asamoah Gyan, the only thing we need is his fitness,” Poloo indicated on Metro’s Good Evening Ghana on Tuesday, October 11, 2022.

“Why not?” Poloo waded into Gyan’s Black Stars comeback debate “He [Asamaoh Gyan] has the quality and track record. But then, it is very important to set everybody free by playing some trial matches to show his competence – that will relieve everybody [the Ghanaian people].”

He told Paul Adom Otchere on the show the 37-year-old playing the friendlies will be a decider whether he merits the consideration or otherwise arguing “experience cannot be purchased”

Mohammed Poloo also brushed off perceptions the supposed ‘bad blood’ between the former Sunderland playmaker and Andre Ayew will trigger tensions in the Black Stars camp should Gyan be named in Otoo Addo’s squad to the World Cup in the ‘oil-rich’ nation.

In August, Asamoah Gyan discussing his future in the Black Stars told the BBC that “talent-wise, everything is there already, so I just have to prepare physically.”

“The World Cup is every footballer’s dream. I think I’ve got a bit of energy left in me to prove myself once again.

“I’ve been out for almost two years now due to injuries but I just need to get my body back in shape. It’s an eight-week programme and, according to my physical instructor, I’m improving faster than he thought,” Gyan explained.
