High Court rejects request to force Akufo-Addo to accept anti-gay bill

The Accra High Court has denied an application aimed at forcing President Akufo-Addo to acknowledge the transmission of the anti-LGBTQ bill that was adopted by Parliament.

The South Dayi MP, Nelson Rockson Dafeamekpor, filed a judicial review application. With the use of its mandamus powers, the legislator hoped to force the president to accept the bill for consideration by forcing parliament to send it.

The Attorney General begged the court to reject the application in his affidavit opposing it, arguing that a decision in favor would mean the High Court would be overstepping its authority.

In her verdict on the subject, Justice Ellen Lordina Serwaa Mireku’s court remarked that it is improper to grant the instant application due to the outstanding applications before the Supreme Court.

The lawyer representing Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, Kpakpo Somoa Addo, has been served with notice to appeal the decision.
