I will be a mother for all — Millicent Sokro, likely first-female Ho Central parliamentary aspirant promises

Even in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) stronghold, 35-year-old, New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate hopeful, Millicent Nana Yaa Sokro, is optimistic about clinging to victory in the Ho Central Constituency.

As a former TESCON President, she believes she ticks the boxes as the right candidate to unseat the incumbent Member of Parliament.

The NPP has never won the Ho Central parliamentary seat since the inception of the Fourth Republic

The party known for its “Development in Freedom” slogan has only presented male candidates over the years to contest for the seat.

Millicent Nana Yaa Sokro says she knows the secrets to unlock the NPP’s challenge in the constituency — to present a female contender in the 2024 polls.

On Friday, August 11, 2023, she filed her nomination form at the party constituency office in Ho.

Madam Sokro and two other male candidates are seeking to represent the party in the constituency come the December 7, 2024, general elections.

She tells Metro News in an interview that she has that special X-factor plus she is a woman to cause upset in the constituency.

“From 1992, it [Ho Central] has been male-dominated. No female has ever fought for the position before so I have the zeal as a young woman to…and I know women, we are mothers, and we never let our children go hungry and for that matter, I want to go so that I can lobby for my women. Not only my women, but the men so that development will come to my area,” she noted.

Millicent Nana Yaa Sokro is running a gender-based campaign and also assuring the delegates of freeing them from impoverishment.

She believes “self-reliance” is key to eradicating poverty and opening the door of development in the Ho Central Constituency.

Plans

Nana Yaa Sokro was just four when Ghana returned to constitutional rule. But she needs no soothsayer to tell her women in her constituency are lurking behind if to date there’s been no female parliamentary aspirant not to talk of a Member of Parliament.

Women Empowerment sits at the top of her priority list. She holds the assertion that women belong to the vulnerable group and as such she will invest heavily in the empowerment of women most especially, single mothers, widows, and young girls to close the gender gap.

Chances

Although the late Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie known popularly as Sir John’s popular phrase “Fear delegates” send chills down the spines of candidates and no matter the rapturous cheers that greet them during campaign trails are uncertain about the outcome, Madam Sokro is different.

She believes leading the governing New Patriotic Party in the Ho Central constituency is a done deal.

“This is an election I know I have the goodwill of the polling station executives and come the election day, I will remain victorious,” she told Metro TV

Delegates

Madam Millicent Sokro has dedicated her life to serving the Danquah-Busia-Dombo tradition. She’s a member of the party’s Medical Team

“I want them [delegates] to rally behind me because going into the 2024 election it’s a difficult one. But then it’s not a war that we are going to use guns and cutlasses. It is about strategies and plans that we are going to put forward to win the election,” she noted.

She reiterated that she is the perfect option to lead the NPP in the Ho Central constituency.
