Journalist allegedly killed in police cells at Mankessim

A 29-year-old journalist has been allegedly killed in a cell by police officers at Mankessim Jedu Divisional Police Command in the Mfantseman Municipality of the Central Region.

The journalist, Kwame Egyama, popularly known as Big Money, was an intern disc jocker at Mankessim-based Coastal FM and also a taxi driver in the township.

During one of his usual taxi business, the police allegedly stopped him on his way but he disobeyed the order, and on the next day, when the police saw him they gave him a hot chase with their motorcycle and got him arrested.

Kwame Egyama was then put in the Mankessim Jedu Divisional Police cell and he called his car owner to inform him about the development.

According to the report, the car owner came and settled the case and agreed to pay any costs the police were demanding.

About fifteen minutes after he went home to get the money to pay the fine, he received a call from the police that the driver had hanged himself in the cell with a rope.

Reports have it that before the car owner returned to the police station, the deceased had already been taken to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital mortuary by the police without informing the family about it.

The mother of the deceased Abena Manu said the deceased journalist cum taxi driver was the breadwinner of the house.

Madam Manu has threatened to invoke curses on the police personnel for allegedly killing their son and putting rope on his neck to set the tone for the narration that he committed suicide.

Speaking to the father of the deceased, Mr. Moses Ocran asked some salient questions. He wants the Mankessim Jedu Police to come out and explain to the family where his son got the rope while in police custody to hang himself.

According to Mr. Ocran, he does not understand why the police deposited the deceased at the mortuary without engaging with the family.

He said the actions of the police are grounds for the family to suspect foul play.

He also kicked against the decision of the police to do an autopsy report without any charge from the family.

Meanwhile, the bereaved family has called on the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, and the government to as a matter of urgency act on the case.

They are demanding justice for the deceased.
