NACCA can’t vouch for recall of controversial textbooks from private schools — Director General

Director General of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), Prof. Edward Appiah, has called on parents and guardians with wards in private schools to pay keen interest in the type of textbooks and learning materials used to teach them since the Council does not regulate books used in the various private schools in Ghana.

The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment established by the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 to develop national curriculum and assessment for pre-tertiary education institutions other than technical and vocational education and training institutions has come under some criticism for the controversial textbook that denigrated Christianity.

Speaking on Nsem A Esisi on Original TV on Thursday afternoon, the Director General of NaCCA, Prof. Edward Appiah stated that even though his outfit has demanded the immediate recall of the textbook titled “History of Ghana for Basic Schools – Learners’ Book Four,” published by Excellence Publications, they cannot vouch for the recall of such books from private schools.

He noted that NaCCA is not responsible for approving textbooks for private schools, stating that approval of recommended textbooks and other learning materials are solely done based on the Legislative Instrument (L.I) for public schools.

He, therefore, called for the review of the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020.

When quizzed on why unapproved textbooks get into the system, he was of the view that the Free Enterprise Policy which gives freedom of individuals and businesses to regulate enables individuals and businesses to create, produce, goods and services with small or no supervision hence his call for the review of act to enable NaCCA have more regulatory powers.
