Niger coup affecting traders at Dominase Onion Market

Importers of Onion from Niger are worried about the negative impact of the country’s coup on their business.

They say several truckloads of onion are stuck behind the borders of Niger and risk getting rotten which will result in huge financial losses.

On a typical day, several trucks fully loaded with onions would have parked at the terminal of the Gomoa Dominase Onion Market, and vigorous business activities would be happening.

However, when Metro TV visited today, August 3, 2023, the market appeared almost dead.

The political unrest in Niger has certainly begun to negatively impact business.

Traders say they are running out of stock of onion as the Niger market is heavily relied on for supply.

The market’s leadership is scared of a possible record of financial losses that may arise as a result of the situation.

They are scared that most of their wares would get rotten as several trucks fully loaded with onions are stuck behind the borders of Niger.

They are appealing for the intervention of the leadership of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to implore the coup makers to open the country’s borders to allow passage of trucks carrying goods.

There are also some concerns being raised about the activities of extremist groups in the subregion. Recently, some trucks belonging to food importers were completely burnt by members affiliated with Nigeria’s pro-militia group Boko Haram.

The event led to huge financial losses for the importers and has gotten them terrified.
