NPP to consider running mate for Bawumia today

The governing New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Council (NC) will meet today, Wednesday, December 6. to consider prospective running mates for its flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The main goal of the meeting is to identify potential candidates that the party considers suitable to partner with Dr. Bawumia and help ‘break the eight’

Names such as Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the Majority Leader and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs are being carefully evaluated, multiple sources have said.

The NEC is expected to decide on these candidates before formally recommending acceptance to the National Council.

This procedure is in accordance with the NPP’s Constitution, which necessitates the nomination of a running mate 12 months before a major election.

Among the names mentioned, experts have tipped the Energy Minister as the best option.

According to them, the Manhyia South MP securing over 88.5% of votes for Dr. Bawumia in the presidential primaries surpasses all other front-runners’ efforts in their constituencies.

Meanwhile, some NPP MPs in the Ashanti region have allegedly objected to the consideration of the Manhyia South Member of Parliament.

The lawmakers at an alleged secret meeting accused Mr. Opoku Prempeh of sponsoring the defeat of some MPs during the party’s 2020 Parliamentary Primary.
