Obengman Community appeals for intervention to stop land guard activities

The chief of Obengman in the Gas South Municipality of Greater Accra, Nii Obeng, has called for government intervention to put an end to the activities of land guards in the community.

Nii Obeng has expressed fears of an impending implosion of violence due to the continuous threats from the land guards and their ongoing sand-winning activities. He warns that surrounding villages are at risk of extinction, and many livelihoods are on the brink of collapse if nothing is done.

Obengman, a once peaceful community with hardworking people, was established in 1739, and predominantly occupied by farmers has recently been plunged into turmoil by the menacing presence of land guards. This longtime peace by the occupants of the Obengman land has been shattered by the nefarious activities of landguardism.

Attempts to sell parcels of land have sparked relentless violence, culminating in a tragic loss of life and leaving another soul fighting for survival in a hospital bed.

The fertile fields that once sustained the livelihoods of Obengman’s farmers have been destroyed by an estate agency that is claiming ownership of the area causing these farmers to become extremely worried and gasping for the intervention from government through state security agencies to calm the situation.

Chief of the community, Nii Obeng fears full-scale violence may soon break out in the coming days given the constant threats from activities of Sand winning which is being supervised by the marauding land guards in the area. He said surrounding villages are facing possible extinction and the livelihoods of many on the verge of being lost unless there is an intervention from the state security.
