Parliament’s National Cathedral probe will prevent waste of taxpayers’ money by another president – Ablakwa

Member of Parliament for North Tongu Constituency in the Volta Region, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa says the ad-hoc committee set to conduct an enquiry into the National Cathedral project and all related matters will prevent the wrongful use of taxpayers by another president.

He noted Parliament is dedicated to investigating the National Cathedral project and no Member of Parliament opposed the decision. However, the 8th parliament has taken a break and will continue with issues when it returns on the third working week of October 2023.

Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa, speaking on Metro TV’s flagship political show, Good Morning Ghana, on Friday, August 4th, 2023, pointed out that the National Cathedral was President Akufo-Addo’s personal pledge, and no Ghanaian was there when the pledge was made.

“The Cathedral is a personal pledge and how did it metamorphosed into a national issue, with the use of taxpayers’ monies to fund this personal project is unbelievable. And also, when an individual makes a pledge to… because we all make pledges to God in one way or another, but individuals must always ensure that they oblige their pledge themselves,” he stated.

Okudzeto Ablakwa added that the committee must be set up in order to clip the wings of another president who wants to use national resources for personal gains and Ghanaians are happy that such a committee will be set up to probe into these issues surrounding the cathedral.

The North Tongu MP added that the National Cathedral project will cost the taxpayer over 100,000,000 million US dollars which to him is very expensive.

“The cathedral will have to factor in the contractors, people affected by the pulled down buildings, and this committee will make sure that all these persons and more, so we don’t ace having gone to court because of the dissatisfied people who were affected by this project,” he ended.
