Pensioners storm Parliament in anticipation of Finance Minister’s presentation

Some pensioner bondholders are seated at the Parliamentary Gallery in anticipation of Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta’s presentation on the Domestic Debt Exchange programme.

The pensioner bondholders are demanding an exclusion of their bonds from the controversial exchange programme.

The Finance Minister was summoned by the Speaker of Parliament to appear before the House on Thursday, February 16, 2023, after the Member of Parliament for North Tongu addressed the issue in the chamber.

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa was concerned because pensioner bondholders were picketing at the Finance Ministry for an exemption from the programme.

In presenting the business statement of Parliament on Friday, Deputy Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin stated that the Minister must appear before Parliament to answer questions brought by constituents of members of the House.

For several days the Pensioner Bondholders Forum has protested against the inclusion of their investments in the Domestic Debt Exchange programme.

Members of the forum have returned to the Finance Ministry to picket for the sixth day.

Their picket is to demand a total exemption of their investments from the programme.

The former Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo on Friday, February 10, joined the protest.

She threatened to sue the government if their pension funds are included in the debt exchange programme.
