Police Confirm Arrest Of 49 Protestors At #OccupyJulorbiHouse Demo

Ghana Police Service has confirmed the arrest of forty-nine (49) protestors at the #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration.

According to the police, these persons were arrested for unlawful assembly and violation of the Public Order Act.

In a statement released by the police, the service explains that these suspects were picked up at the 37 Military Hospital Bus Stop and the Jubilee House areas.

The suspects include the leaders of the demonstration and some participants.

Justifying their arrest, the police explained that the group disregarded the court process served on them which prohibited the planned three-day non-stop picketing at the Jubilee House.

The 49 suspects, the police revealed are still in custody assisting investigation.

In addition, the police have cautioned the public to desist from taking part in any demonstration organized by the Democracy Hub until the application before the court has been determined on September 26, 2023.

“We would like to state that the Police do not take delight in preventing any group from demonstrating as the Service has a track record of providing security for demonstrations in the past. The exception, in this case, is the police disagreement with the organizers on the venue, the Jubilee House being a security zone,” the police indicated.

The statement further noted, “we reiterate our position on the need for the general public in the interest of public order and public safety to disregard any invitation by the organizers to take part in any unlawful demonstration until the determination of the matter by the court on the 26th of September 2023.”
