Saglemi Housing Project investment a waste of money -Kafui Amegah

The Saglemi Housing Project does not appear to be economically viable for the government to invest further in, according to Kafui Amegah, a member of the New Patriotic Party’s communications team.

According to Kafui Amegah, politicians’ corruption and poor planning are to blame for the Saglemi housing project’s terrible condition.

“In the case of inexpensive housing, President Kufuor initiated the first significant affordable housing initiative in recent memory. Before leaving the office, he didn’t complete the projects. It was anticipated that the new administration would keep it up out of goodwill and even in compliance with the constitution, but instead it decided to start a new project at Kpone, where one of the affordable housing developments was located, and moved miles away for political reasons. Many factors were not taken into account when this project was being designed in Saglemi,”Kafui Amegah told Kwaku Owusu Adjei on Adwenekasa on Accra-based Original FM91.9.

He thinks there was financial mismanagement in the Saglemi Housing  project, which led to subpar work.

He asserted that after Parliament approved the agreement in October 2012 to build 5,000 housing units, the then-minister evaluated the contract and reduced the number of homes to around 1,500, and later to 1,024 units following another review in 2016.

The project’s 1,500 housing unit initial phase, which John Mahama approved in 2016, has been abandoned.

The project, which is located on a 300-acre plot of land and provides low-income families with one- to three-bedroom flats, was designed to help address the country’s enormous housing shortage.
