Samson Deen calls on Corporate Ghana to support Para-Athletes ahead of Paris 2024

Samson Deen, President of the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) Ghana, has appealed to corporate Ghana to support the country’s para-athletes in their preparations for international competitions.

This appeal came as he welcomed four athletes and their coach who returned from the 2024 International Para Athletics Grand Prix in Marrakech, Morocco.

Deen praised the two medalists, Zinabu Issah and Edmund Govina, who won gold and bronze medals respectively. He noted that Ghana’s para-athletes consistently bring home medals, but need motivation and inspiration to perform even better in future championships.

The athletes’ achievements include:

<span;>- Edmund Govina: bronze in the F46/F44/F68 Discus Throw with a personal best distance of 18.04 meters, and 6th place in the T46 Javelin with a personal best throw of 21.81 meters.

<span;>- Zinabu Issah: two gold medals in the Discus Throw and Shot Put.

<span;>- Amos Ahiagah: personal bests in the T46 100 meters (12.63 seconds), T46 400 meters (1:04.02 minutes), and T46 Long Jump (5.14 meters).

<span;>- Diana Kuubetegr: personal bests in the T46 800 meters (2:50 minutes), an African record, and T46 1500 meters (6:12.65 minutes).

Coach Ibrahim Sulemana emphasized the need for better preparations to achieve even better results. He also appealed to the media to promote para sports.

Four other coaches, including Patrick Yaw Obeng and Ernest Brako Ofei, received classification certificates at the ceremony.

The athletics team will soon move into camp to prepare for the Paris 2024 Grand Prix, another opportunity for Ghana to qualify and compete in the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.

In related news, Ghana will host the African Paralympic Committee (APC) AGM in Accra from May 16 to 18, 2024. Additionally, Tahiru Haruna will lead the Black Optimist Para Powerlifting Team to the Mexico 2024 Parapan American World Cup from May 23 to 26, 2024.
