Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey dismisses all overstaying employees at passport office

The internet system at the passport office has allegedly been compromised in an effort to inject corruption into the passport application process, according to Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration.

Ayorkor Botchwey stated some names have been submitted in connection with the development after an investigation after visiting the passport office in Accra on Monday (14 August), expressing anger over the development.

Ayorkor Botchwey urged employees who have been seconded to the passport office for more than year to terminate their employment in statement to the media.

“This cannot continue, I always say that there is too much happening, which should not be happening in the passport acquisition system, if we talk about ‘goro people’ (middlemen), this ‘goro people’ are outsiders, they do not work on their own… and this should stop.

“The vice-president has led the digitalisation effort with my support to put in place an online system, now the online system is being manipulated, so that people can make money from it. There is an investigation and some names have been mentioned.”
