Simon Osei Mensah under fire for role in ECG Manager’s arrest

Senior staff members of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Central Region are demanding an apology from Ashanti Regional Minister Simon Osei-Mensah over the arrest of their colleague, the ECG manager in the Ashanti Region.

At a press conference in Cape Coast, the ECG Senior Staff Association Union called for Mensah to withdraw the case against the manager, who was arrested for disconnecting power at Kumasi Technical University.

Staff members wore red bands and chanted war songs to express their displeasure. Union Chairman, Agyare Badiako and other regional executives spoke out against government interference in the matter.

The union is seeking an apology and a withdrawal of the case, warning against further interference from government institutions.

Background

Ing. Michael Asomani Wiafe, the Ashanti East General Manager of the Electricity Company of Ghana, was taken into custody on April 10, 2024, after carrying out a routine disconnection of power supply to Kumasi Technical University due to non-payment.

The Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah, disapproved of the action and ordered Wiafe’s arrest.

Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Minister Simon Osei-Mensah has refused demands for an apology from Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) staff, saying he was performing his duties.

Osei-Mensah said ECG had agreed to settle its debt with Kumasi Technical University within a specified timeframe, but management breached the agreement by failing to adhere to the payment schedule.

The minister reported ECG Ashanti East General Manager Michael Asomani Wiafe to the police, citing the breach of agreement.
