10% betting tax outrageous – Nii Lante Vanderpuye

Former Youth and Sports Minister, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye has stressed that the new 10% tax on all winnings from sports betting and lotteries is uncalled for.

Speaking on Original TV on Wednesday afternoon, the long-serving Member of Parliament for Odododiodio constituency explained It is unnecessary to deduct a betting tax if sports don’t benefit directly from the revenue gathered.

According to him, the 10 percent is simply outrageous.  He believes it’s on the high side and very unnecessary if indeed it is to curb laziness amongst the youth of the country.

“This 10 percent betting tax is outrageous and very unnecessary if it’s going into the government’s coffers and sports will not benefit direct,” he fumed.

“I will appreciate it if there is a separate fund for this revenue to be gathered from these deductions to be used directly to develop sports”, Nii Lante Vanderpuye added.

The outspoken Odododiodio MP concluded that there are too many tax deductions in the system already and there is no need to add sports betting tax.
