10 NIA staff sacked for extorting money from Ghana Card applicants

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has fired ten of its workers for various infractions.

This came after thorough investigations by the Ghana Police Service’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID), which was based at the NIA’s headquarters in Accra.

The Registrar General’s Department Office, Western Regional Office, Subin Sub-Metro District Office in the Ashanti Region, and La-Nkwantanang Municipal Office all participated in the investigations.

Following the investigations, several employees were determined to be responsible for requesting and taking unlawful money from Ghana Card applicants as well as for abusing the registration process for their own benefit.

In a public notice on Tuesday, August 15, the Authority said the ten dismissed staff “not only contravened the fundamental principles of integrity and transparency upheld by the NIA but also eroded the very essence of its purpose, which is to ensure dependability and credibility”.

“The dismissal of the officers serves as a strong signal that respect for the fundamental human rights of NIA staff will go hand in hand with the swift and certain application of the law, aiming to establish a strong, ethical, agile, and professional national institution committed to building a country of which citizens can be truly proud,” the statement available to Metro TV added.
