12-year old girl married to Gborbu Wulomo is under protection – Police

The 12-year-old girl who wed the Gborbu Wulomo of Nungua is said to be under the protection of the Ghana Police Service.

The Police said in a statement that the parents and child are presently in their care while the contentious marriage is being looked into.

In a brief statement, the police stated that swift measures have been implemented to guarantee the security and safety of the little child and her mother, who are presently under police guard.

The Ghana Police Service further stated that steps have been taken to give the girl the support and help she needs during this trying time in partnership with the Department of Social Welfare and the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection.

The Gborbu Wulomo, Nuumo Borketey Laweh XXXIII, came under fire when a video showing him weding 12-year-old Naa Okromo surfaced online.

On March 30, 2024, a Saturday, the customary marriage ceremony took place in Nungua.

In defense of himself, Gborbu Wulomo said that the girl would not be required to perform marital duties.

As per their community’s conventions, Naa Okromo will now be called as Naa Ayemoede, according to reports. She is anticipated to take part in a second traditional ritual centered around purification.
