46 more arrested in connection with attacks on police at Kwahu Bepong

The Ghana Police Service has arrested sixty- four (64) more persons following the recent attacks on police in Kwahu Bepong  in the Eastern region, bringing the total number of suspects arrested to seventy- one (71).

The suspects, together with others, currently on the run, attacked the Bepong Chief’s Palace on the 4th of February 2024 and injured seven (7) people including five (5) police officers.

They vandalized one (1) police vehicle and six (6) police motorbikes as well as three (3) private vehicles.

The suspects also caused damage to the sections of the palace and an adjoining building.

In an update on Facebook, the police provided information on the investigation and screening of forty (40)  of the suspects who have been identified to play various roles in the attacks.

The turbulence began when the police officers came under attack at the palace when they were called on the 4th of February 2024 to take over a murder suspect, one Kwesi Nyako who had been arrested by some community members and sent to Bepong Chief’s Palace awaiting the arrival of the police.

Some members in the community including those in police custody who had heard about the arrest of Kwesi Nyako had besieged the place in hopes of lynching the suspect. However, when the police prevented them, they rather attacked the police throwing stones and other implements at them.

Again, the police have announced that peace and order have been restored in the Bepong township and all suspects will be put before the court to face justice.
