Former President, John Dramani Mahama has jumped to the defense of the embattled NDC candidate for the Assin North By-Election, James Gyakye Quayson insisting the former Member of Parliament will never end up in jail.

According to the former President, his reaction follows the calculated and deliberate attempt by the governing NPP to deceive the constituents of Assin North that Mr. Gyakye Quayson will definitely end up in jail.

Mr. Gyakye Quayson is currently facing criminal charges for failing to fully renounce his Canadian citizenship before contesting the 2020 parliamentary seat in the Assin North Constituency as required by the electoral laws of the country.

Speaking to some constituents, Mr. Mahama explained that he cannot fathom why members of the NPP always liken the case of Mr. Gyakye Quayson to Mr. Adamu Daramani Sakande, a former NPP MP who was jailed over his citizenship before contesting as an MP.

He explained that the current case is very different from the old case since Mr. Quayson did not hide his foreign passport as Mr. Sakande did.

He therefore stressed that their candidate for the by-election will never and ever end up in jail adding that the mantra being propagated by the NPP is a deliberate attempt to deceive the people of the constituency.

“Today President came to Assin North for a rally. He wanted to say something about Gyakye Quayson so he used their former MP Sakande as an example. The President cannot come and deceive the people of Assin North. The cases of Sikande and Gyakye Quayson are never the same. Sakande went to jail because he lied. He hid his passport. Gyakye Quayson has not hidden any passport. So I’m standing here to tell you that their mantra that Gyakye Quayson will go to prison is an act of deception. He won’t go to prison today or tomorrow,” Mr. Mahama declared.
