Black Princesses beat Nigeria to lift the WAFU Zone B U20 Girls Tournament trophy

The inaugural Wafu B U20 Girls Cup of Nations held in Kumasi, Ghana, concluded with the Black Princesses of Ghana emerging as the champions.

Having topped Group A, the Ghanaian team faced off against Nigeria, the standout team of the tournament, in the grand finale.

Although Coach Yussif Basigi’s girls didn’t start strongly, they narrowly avoided falling behind as Nigeria threatened in the opening quarter of the match. However, Ghana regained their composure with Mafia Nyame and Stella Nyamekye leading the charge upfront, while Sarah Kurible and Fatima Fuseini provided solid defense at the back.

It was skipper Stella Nyamekye who broke the deadlock for Ghana, converting a penalty kick and giving her team an early lead.

Despite their efforts to find another goal, Ghana couldn’t capitalize, and the first half ended in their favor.

After the break, Ghana picked up where they left off, continuing to apply pressure on Nigeria in search of a second goal.

Mary Amponsah was brought on to strengthen Ghana’s attack, but the momentum quickly shifted as Nigeria equalized following an error by Ghana’s goalkeeper, Afi Amenyeku.

With no further goals in regular time, the match went into a penalty shootout, where Ghana emerged victorious with a 3-1 scoreline, securing the ultimate trophy.

In the tournament’s third-place match, Burkina Faso defeated Benin 2-1 to claim the Bronze medal.

Ghana’s captain, Stella Nyamekye, was named the tournament’s best player, while Nigeria’s Esther Ajakaye received the top scorer award.
