Basic School Rebrand: Are they going to be painting schools under trees? Ablakwa mocks govt

Member of Parliament for North Tongu Constituency, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has slammed the Education Minister, Yaw Osei Adutwum for changing the colours of basic schools from the normal yellow and brown to black and white or blue and white.

Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on Friday, April 26, the North Tongu lawmaker posited that the Education Ministry has got priorities wrong and in need of a dire avenue to create loot and share.

“We are all in Ghana, we see the state of our basic schools, are they going to be painting schools under trees? Deplorable schools? How can this become a priority? Another procurement gig, that’s all that is going on,” he said.

During a forum titled ‘The Free SHS story’ in Accra on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, the Education Minister, Yaw Osei Adutwum announced that the brown and yellow uniforms would be replaced.

He admitted that basic education has been the weakest link in the education sector from time immemorial.

“We are changing the uniforms of public basic schools in the country. The yellow and brown that you see now, you will see no more. Reformation is coming to a community near you, and you will see it,” says the Education Minister

Okudzeto Ablakwa has however unequivocally stated that the Minority in Parliament and Ghanaians will not support the dubious move by the Education Ministry, adding that some basic schools are wallowing in abject poverty and deprived of essentials needed to thrive hence the incomprehensible decision by the Education Ministry will not wash.

“You don’t tell us that you are going to engage in changing of colors when we know the state of basic education,” he said.

Dr Yaw Adutwum explained that this initiative is a component of the government’s broader efforts to demonstrate that its priorities extend beyond secondary education alone.
