EC begins limited voter registration today

The Electoral Commission of Ghana has began a 21-day voter registration exercise aimed at enrolling first-time voters and issuing voter cards.

The exercise, which began on Tuesday, May 7, targets approximately 623,000 new voters across the country.

The registration will take place daily from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm

Electoral Commission Chairperson Jean Mensa said the commission has taken measures to mitigate potential disruptions due to power outages, including renting generators for district offices. In the event of a generator failure, registration will continue offline, with voter details stored on pen drives to be uploaded later.

“This exercise aims to register approximately 623,000 first-time voters,” said Ms. Mensa. “We have made arrangements to ensure that power outages do not disrupt the process.”

The Electoral Commission of Ghana has faced challenges in the past due to power outages, but has assured citizens that measures have been put in place to prevent this from happening during this exercise.
