Bugri Naabu asked me to recommend a competent IGP to replace Dampare – Supt. Asare

Bugri Naabu asked me to recommend a competent IGP to replace Dampare – Supt. Asare

Superintendent George Asare, another senior police officer implicated in the leaked audio plotting to remove the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akufffo Dampare, says the conversation was birthed after an invitation from Daniel Bugri Naabu, a former NPP Northern Regional chairman to his office in Osu, Accra.

During his appearance before the committee tasked with investigating the leaked tape on Monday, September 4, Superintendent Asare said Bugri Naabu asked him to recommend another competent officer to be named an IGP.

Upon this request, Supt. Asare told the committee he submitted some names.

“Bugri Naabu asked me to recommend another competent officer who can fill the position of an IGP so I recommend three other senior officers; COP Ernest Owusu, COP Maame Yaa Tiwa, COP Christian Tetteh, and another,” he disclosed.

This account is similar to the one shared by COP George Alex Mensah.

During the Parliamentary probe, the former Director-General, Technical of the Ghana Police Service, COP Alex Mensah indicated that his visit to Mr Naabu’s office was due to the NPP member’s supposed search for a new top officer.

“The purpose of Mr Bugri Naabu inviting me was that one of my boys, the police officers, had gone to tell him that if they are looking for a new Inspector General of Police, then the man that he thinks can do the job and do it well is Commissioner George Alex Mensah.

“And Bugri Naabu said ‘Oh is that so, then bring him and let me see him’, That was why I ended up at Bugri Naabu’s office.”

“I had [belief] because I knew or I have heard his name when it comes to NPP party circles, that he was a former chairman, he’s a friend of the president so once my boy told me that the man says he’s ready to recommend me but he wants to see me, I said why not. If somebody wants to see you not for a bad thing but a good thing, I will go,” he added.
