Calm finally returns to Bawku after two years of protracted conflict

Calm has finally returned to Bawku in the Upper East Region after two years of protracted ethnic conflict.

Serious disturbances broke between Kusasis and Mamprusis after attempts to install a parallel chief to the sitting Bawku Naba.

The conflict which started in November 2021 has taken close to thousands of lives and millions worth of property. Many residents fled the area and currently seeking asylum in Accra, Kumasi, Techiman, and other cities in the country.

Businesses are beginning to return to their normal state since September 2023. There has not been a case of a serious gun battle or an attack on anyone lately.

Speaking to Metro News, the Municipal Chief Executive for the area, Amadu Hamza said “Apart from two incidences of armed robbery attacks on two local forex bureau operators, there hasn’t been any attack on anyone”.

He added that measures are been put in place to maintain law and order in the area.

Bawku was known to be one of the best business centers in Ghana until the conflict destroyed that reputation. Bawku located around the boundary of Ghana, shares borders with Burkina Faso and Togo.

A tour of the area recently indicated residents are beginning to accept one another and business centers beginning to thrive effectively.

Some residents have expressed their happiness towards the situation and mentioned that they expect to situation to continue to be the same even after the election season.
