Cement manufacturers snub meeting with Trade Minister over price regulation

Five cement manufacturers, including Dangote, Supacem, Ghacem, Diamond Cement, and CIMAF, boycotted a meeting with Trade and Industry Minister KT Hammond on Monday, July 1, 2024, to discuss a proposed Legislative Instrument (LI) to regulate cement prices.

The manufacturers cited the need for closed-door meetings, according to Citinewsroom.

Despite their absence, Hammond remains resolute in laying the LI before Parliament on Tuesday, July 2, 2024.

Hammond clarified that consultation with stakeholders has been ongoing, and the LI aims to regulate cement pricing in the country.

The move has been met with opposition from manufacturers, who argue that the LI will negatively impact their businesses.

The development comes amid concerns over the rising cost of cement in Ghana, which has affected the construction industry.
