Court restrains Dormaahene from attending Berekumhene’s funeral

The Sunyani High Court has ruled that Osagyefo Nana Agyeman Badu, the Paramount Chief of Dormaa Traditional Area, is not permitted to attend the funeral ceremonies of Daasebre Dr. Amankona Diawuo II, the late Paramount Chief of Berekum Traditional Area.

This comes after Osabarima Kyere Yeboah Darteh II of the Berekum Traditional Council filed a lawsuit.

According to sources, the Dormahene planned to attend the funeral at the same time as Otumfour Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, which may have disrupted the tranquility in the area. For this reason, the decision was made to obtain the injunction.

According to a program outline published by the Berekum Traditional Council, yesterday, Wednesday, November 22, was the burial day for the Dormahene, the President, members of the Bono Regional and National Houses of Chiefs, and other notable individuals.

This was done to make room for Otumfour Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, to attend the funeral on Thursday, November 23.

Since it is within his authority and right to enstool a new chief following the burial, the Otumfuor is customarily expected to be the final person to attend a Berekumhene’s funeral.

The Berekum Traditional Council was forced to take legal action because the Dormaahene, who was supposed to attend the occasion earlier, chose to attend at the same time as the Otumfour for reasons that are only known to him.

Sources claim that this is being done to avoid any possible disruption that might arise if the two traditional heads happen to meet at the same moment at the ceremony.

The Ghana Police Service has also been asked by the court to support the Berekum Traditional Council in enforcing the injunction order to preserve peace in Berekum and the surrounding area.
