Doctor at centre of abandoned patient saga steps aside pending investigation

The Medical Director of the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba has been asked to step aside pending the outcome of an investigation into the alleged abandonment of a patient in a bush at Gomoa Ojobi.

According to a statement from the Ghana Health Service, the move is aimed at ensuring “credibility and unfettered access to all relevant information” as a committee constituted by the Health Ministry investigates the incident.

The Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, said in the statement available to Metro TV that the Medical Director’s temporary relief of duties is to ensure a thorough and unbiased investigation.

“We want to ensure that the investigation is conducted without any interference or influence,” the statement said.

The committee, which includes representatives from the Ghana Health Service, the Ministry of Health, and the Social Welfare Department, has been tasked with establishing the facts surrounding the incident and making recommendations for appropriate action.

The move comes as the Health Ministry seeks to get to the bottom of the incident, which has sparked widespread outrage and calls for accountability.
