EC’s Withdrawal From NDC’s Congress Will Deepen Its Perceived Rift With The Opposition – Prof. Gyampo

Political Scientist and Senior lecturer at the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana, Professor Ransford Yaw Gyampo has opined that the withdrawal of the Electoral Commission from the May 13 NDC Congress will further worsen the perceived rift between the opposition and the EC.

Following an interlocutory injunction served on the EC by one of the aggrieved aspirants of the presidential primaries; Dr. Kwabena Duffour, the elections management body in a statement on Wednesday announced its withdrawal from the primaries.

The EC, mandated by the NDC to organize the presidential and parliamentary primaries in an attempt to avoid contempt of court arrived at the decision.

Reacting to the development in a series of Facebook posts, the renowned political scientist admitted that it was not wrong for the EC to pull out following the interlocutory injunction.

However, Professor Gyampo further noted that the situation could have been managed better by the EC. The vociferous lecturer cannot fathom why the EC involved the public and the media in these matters.

To him, the issues could have been discussed behind closed doors. What has happened, Professor Gyampo believes will further deepen the perceived tension between the EC and the opposition NDC.

“The EC wasn’t wrong in pulling out. But this could have been discussed in camera without the media. What has been done may deepen the perception that they don’t like the NDC.” Professor Gyampo wrote.

“Relational Competence is key to functioning as an arbiter,” he further declared.
