Ghana Card is the surest way to ensure integrity of the voters’ register — Bossman Asare

The Ghana Card should be the only form of identity used for voter registration, according to the Electoral Commission (EC).

During a press conference on Thursday, Dr. Bossman Asare, a deputy chairperson of the commission, stated that instances of minors and foreigners abusing the guarantor system used in the ongoing limited voter registration exercise support the need for the use of a document that will make it simple to determine the applicants’ ages and nationalities.

Dr. Asare believes that using the Ghana Card as the only form of identification during voter registration will enhance the integrity of the electoral roll and guarantee that only Ghanaians who are legally entitled to vote are registered.

The EC’s proposal has caused some controversy; some critics claim that it will deny voting rights to many Ghanaians who do not possess Ghana Cards.

Dr. Asare gave Ghanaians the reassurance that the EC is striving to make sure that everyone who is qualified to register to vote has the chance to do so.

“He said the EC is working with the National Identification Authority (NIA) to ensure that all eligible Ghanaians have access to Ghana Cards.
