Gov’t begins French language training for frontline hospitality staff

In an effort to strengthen Ghana’s reputation as a friendly travel destination in the sub-region, the government has started training around 2,000 members of the country’s hospitality industry in French as part of an extensive language training program.

The action, which is a component of the government’s Ghana Cares Economic Transformation program, is intended to promote effective communication and offer outstanding, individualized services to guests who are Francophones, reaffirming Ghana’s commitment to supporting a diverse and culturally aware tourism industry.

On Sunday, September 24, 2023, Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed Awal, Minister for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, made the following statement to press in Accra: “The majority of tourists frequenting Ghana’s tourist sites originate from French-speaking nations.”

As a result, the language training program has been thoughtfully created to equip frontline staff members across the tourism industry with bilingual proficiency, enabling them to interact effectively and meet the unique needs of visitors, particularly those from French-speaking countries.

He claimed that the training program has been carefully prepared and divided into numerous stages. A select group of 100 employees from upscale hotels in Accra are taking part in the first phase, which began last month and will last until December 2023.

Prior to the initiative being implemented on a larger scale, it functions as a pilot program to ensure thorough training and assessment.

Dr. Awal stated that the government’s vision goes beyond this initial stage and emphasized that the ultimate goal is to train 2,000 hospitality staff members in order to support the government’s overarching goal of making Ghana a more alluring travel destination for a variety of tourists.

He assured Ghanaians of the government’s steadfast commitment to expanding service quality and developing tourist centers in the country by saying that such investments in skill development are essential for the long-term growth and prosperity of the tourism sector.
