Gov’t will secure 100 electric buses for Metro Mass Transit – Dr Bawumia

The government will purchase 100 electric buses for Metro Mass Transit Ltd. by the end of this year, according to Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.

The goal of the order is to integrate e-vehicles into Ghana’s “Tap and Go” public transportation system.

This was revealed by Vice-President Bawumia on Monday, February 19, in Accra, when he introduced the “Tap and Go” system and ticketing option for Metro Mass Transit Ltd.

He claimed that Ghana’s public transportation system would no longer be corrupted or experience revenue losses thanks to the “Tap and Go” program, which also introduced a digital card system akin to the UK’s Oyster Card.

Using a digital card that has been filled with cash, travelers can pay for their ride by only tapping the card on a stationary machine that is mounted on every bus.

A virtual card option for mobile phone payment will also be provided by a mobile app. Security cameras will be put in the electric buses to monitor activity on board through the Metro Mass Transit control room, improving safety and monitoring.

According to Dr. Bawumia, the “Tap and Go” program will incorporate a manifest system that allows travelers to register for a travel pass using their phone number and Ghana Card, guaranteeing security and openness.

Additional features include top-up possibilities via mobile money accounts and the opportunity to buy tickets from home prior to bus boarding.

The “Tap and Go” program is anticipated to transform public transportation and improve the standard of services provided to the general population.
