GRA Impasse: Give equal support to private businesses to strive – Sylvester Tetteh

The Member of Parliament for Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfrom constituency, Sylvester Tetteh, has bemoaned the lack of support from the government to private businesses.

To him, the government has shown less support for local private businesses to strive and grow the economy.

This comes on the heels of Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong who is aspiring to lead the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections alleged that his businesses are under attack as a result of his decision to run for president.

According to Mr. Agyapong, state institutions are frustrating and intimidating him in his quest to lead the NPP in the 2024 NPP elections.

Speaking on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV, Mr. Tetteh indicated that the treatment allegedly meted out to the Assin Central MP was an indictment on his reputation, adding that such engagements from the GRA with their clients should not be exposed to the public but be done discreetly.

According to him, the government through its GRA is insensitive to the plight of some privately-owned businesses which is not so in some jurisdictions.

“In other jurisdictions, the state in itself supports such initiatives and then go every length to ensure that some services are rendered for private individuals who have undertaken some business ventures that will be so beneficial.’’

He also echoed the importance of some industries, privately owned in Ghana which have become the bedrock for development and as a result cannot be undermined naming B5 Iron and Steel company to buttress his point.

Mr. Tetteh intimated that businesses especially those owned by individuals in the country must be supported by the relevant stakeholders and not attacked because some businesses extend their services outside the country and the returns recouped are brought back into the country.

‘’If a Ghanaian is rising to the occasion, I think that GRA and other relevant state institutions should offer technical and support services to them.’’

Wading into the conversation, Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Samuel Nartey George, who was also a panelist on the show stated his excitement for having Kennedy Agyapong speak to the domineering issue.

He believes that what a lot of Ghanaians fear to voice out has now been laid bare by the Member of Parliament, indicating that this will be a disclaimer that will be solved over time.
